At what age can a child learn to sing?

At the Leanne Hoad Singing Studio, we take students from about the age of 7 years.

Children need to be able to read, understand what the teacher has to say, and be able to apply what is asked of them.

The exception is when a child has been singing for years (usually doing song & dance with a Dance Studio). If the child is already doing a lot of singing, he or she might as well be learning to do it properly.

Any younger than this and a different approach to learning is required; more emphasis is placed on exploring sounds and different instruments. In addition, incorporating movement and singing in the form of a 'game' is generally suitable for the student under 7 years.

The larynx(voice box) and vocal folds of a child are not developed until approximately 16 years old. Thus, children need to be taught differently to adults.

The analogy I use is that singing is very physical. You would not put a child through an adult aerobics workout. You can however put a child through a workout geared towards their age group.
