How to get to Balaklava

The following information is for LHSS students who are already registered for this year's event.

2004 Balaklava Eisteddfod

Many of our students gain valuable experience from competing at the Balaklava Eisteddfod.

It is a wonderful confidence booster for those who perform. They also receive constructive feedback in the form of a 'critic' sheet after their performance.

Singers of all styles are welcome
Entrants can enter any, or all, of the following vocal divisions (a small entry fee applies to each division):

  • Open Vocal (no PA or microphone)
  • Duets and Trios
  • Musical Theatre
  • Contemporary Vocal (Amplified Voice-using a PA & microphone)

Accompanists' details for competitors from LHSS
Malcolm Day and Peter Johns have offered to play for our students at the 2004 Balaklava Eisteddfod on Saturday 31 July.

Those who require piano accompaniment are welcome to use either Malcolm or Peter (your choice). You can, of course, use your own accompanist if you wish. We are merely offering Malcolm or Peter as our recommendation if you don't have access to your own accompanist.

Notes to 2004 Competitors

Copies of music:

  • Transposing songs
    LHSS uses Andrew McDonald hm ph 8370 6478, mob 0400 665 377 to change the key of songs on CD or print music: Transposing print music - approximately $6 per page or 50-60cents per bar. Changing key of a CD - approximately $10.00 per track
  • Print Music
    Print music can be purchased from any good print music store. LHSS uses the following two outlets: Print Musicworks ph 1800 060 518 (toll free). Sheet music can be purchased online or by phone. Allans Music 58 Gawler Place Adelaide ph 8223 5533. Sheet music can be purchased online or by phone.
  • Backing music
    Backing tracks can be purchased from any good backing music outlet. LHSS uses Clark Music Australia ph (08) 8266 6189 or purchase online
  • Supplying music to the adjudicator
    The adjudicator (at Balaklava) requires the original songbook or sheet music for each song in the Vocal and Music Theatre sections. If original music is not commercially available then lyrics must be provided as a minimum. This is to be submitted at registration (half an hour before the section begins)

  • Supplying music to the accompanist
    Those who are using piano accompaniment will need to provide the accompanist with a copy of the music prior to the rehearsal. Check to see if Leanne has done this already
  • Backing CDs for Vocal & Music Theatre Sections
    If you are using backing music (backing CDs) for the Vocal and Musical Theatre section, you will need to provide a Stereo player to play your backing track, and someone to operate it. Backing vocals can be used in backing tracks if the adjudicator can clearly distinguish the soloist's voice. You will need to set up the Stereo player prior to the the commencement of the section. (take a double adapter)
  • Backing CDs for Contemporary Section
    The venue for the Contemporary Vocal section is providing a sound engineer (mixer) who will operate the sound system. THERE IS NO NEED TO SUPPLY YOUR OWN STEREO FOR THE CONTEMPORARY VOCAL SECTION. Simply hand the backing music to them (preferably marked with which track number they should play) at registration half an hour before the sections begins. Backing tracks used in the Contemporary Vocal can have backing vocals however backing vocals can be used if the adjudicator can clearly distinguish the soloist's voice.
    The entrant will be allowed a 30 second sound check immediately before the song.

Please be aware of at least the following points contained in the Balaklava Eisteddfod Rules:

  • no entrant is allowed to perform the same item in more than one section
  • entrants may enter duets, ensembles etc any number of times in a section providing that at least half the group is changed
  • prompting or assistance of any kind may not be given to any entrant, except by an Adjudicator should he/she desire

  • follow Main North Road out of Adelaide to Gepps Cross
  • keep going north (straight ahead) on Port Wakefield Road
  • take the Two Wells turn off then head to Mallala
  • follow the signs to Balaklava
