Private Singing Lessons

SingerSinging is a learnt skill.

We are here to help you sing a whole lot better. We can teach anyone to sing. No one is beyond being taught. We aren't concerned if you aren't naturally talented, we take your voice as it stands, and make you sound the best you can. You don't need to know how to sing or have any prior experience: we will teach you everything. Also, you are never too old to do singing lessons!

Why Sing?

Most people take singing lessons at our Studio just for fun, to sound good in the shower or to enjoy doing karaoke well. Some join us to see if they can have a career in music. Others want to join bands or be in musicals. All of these are great reasons for learning to sing and that's where we come in.

Our success lies in our thorough knowledge of correct singing technique. Private lessons allow us to apply the vocal techniques specifically to your voice. You will sing songs suited to your skill level and personal tastes - always singing songs you enjoy.

We teach everyone, from beginners with no experience at all right through to experienced singers wanting to polish their technique.

Private singing lessons are suited to students from the age of 7 years. The 5-7 year group class is recommended for students younger than 7 yrs old.

You can also do private lessons with family or friends. We offer both duo private lessons (two students to a teacher) and trio private lessons ( three students to a teacher).

See if private lessons are for you by trying the 1 hour Introductory lesson. Like private lessons, this will be with just you and your teacher. If doing the duo private Introductory lesson, it will be with two of you and your teacher.

See Kids page for your child's private and group lesson

James SpargoIn a typical lesson you will:

  • learn vocal techniques,
  • do vocal exercises to try out the techniques and warm up the voice.
  • sing songs using your newly learnt techniques to hear the improvement.

Typical techniques covered include breathing, breath support, singing low, middle and high notes, posture, soft palatal lift (for high notes, helping to eliminate nasal sounds, and singing in tune), warming up and cooling down the voice.

Our primary goal when you first start is to get you singing in tune and sounding good.

You'll also learn to project and strengthen your voice. You'll cover the correct techniques to sing loud (and soft) safely. If required, you may also cover vocal health (caring for your voice so it lasts the long haul), articulation and learn to eliminate any unnecessary nasality.

Other skills to learn include techniques to sing different styles: pop, rock, jazz and musical theatre, harmonies (singing in parts and doing backing vocals in a band), microphone technique and learning to read music.

When you are singing well, we offer performing opportunities to everyone who is interested. See Performing page.

Some students live in the outer metropolitan areas or in the country and can't do weekly lessons. Others have limited time to learn songs for special events such as auditions, birthdays, weddings or gigs.

Call us on 8364 0773 and we'll can accommodate you.

We'll tailor lessons based on your needs, goals, availability and openings in the Studio's teaching schedule.

In these situations, most people benefit from 1 hour lessons (rather than 30 mins) at a time. All lessons must be paid in advance when you book. The fee for each one hour lesson is the same as you would pay for a 1 hour Introductory lesson. See fees

Each tailored lesson is private: just you and your teacher. It is recommended that you record each lesson live to CD so you practice between visits. This is a free service - simply bring along a blank CD to each lesson and hand it to your teacher, or purchase from the studio for only $2.50.

Material covered in these lessons depends on your needs and goals. If learning songs for your special occasion, we could focus on these songs and the technique to improve them.

If you're aiming for an audition, bring the audition entry requirements with you as they're often quite specific. Your teacher can also give you plenty of practical tips for making the right impact at auditions.

If you are a country student, we would approach lessons as we would our weekly students. So that you aren't disadvantaged by the time between lesson, we suggest you record each lesson to CD to assist your practice. See Singing Practice Tips.
